Pizza Crawl 10/8/10

On Friday The Hubs and I went on an awesome pizza crawl with two of our friends, who appreciate pizza just as much as we do. We decided to hit up three places for good ol' cheese pizza - Oniontown Grill in Danvers, Luigi's of Beverly, and Soma, also of Beverly. It was an interesting night...

First up - Oniontown

Overall, this was a very good pizza. The cheese and sauce were tasty and the crust had a good thickness. However, one crawl participant mentioned that the sauce was a "bit much" while another suggested that though the pizza was good, it was just a "hang out pizza," good for eating while watching sports and drinking beers, but that's about it. A few of us agreed that while it was tasty (we polished it off quick!) there was something keeping us from ranking it higher. Something was missing, though we couldn't name what this might be.

Next - Luigi's

This was an interesting pizza. We had varied opinions here. While I think we all liked that the cheese and sauce covered the crust all the way to the edge, almost eliminating the crust, we had different opinions on the sauce itself. The sauce is the ever controversial "sweet sauce." We were divided on this, two of us enjoying the sweet flavor and two of us missing the taste of salty tang. One mentioned that while he enjoyed everything about the pizza, this one was also missing something. Another felt that the sauce was not only too sweet, but the sauce was inconsistently seasoned - one bite sweet and flavorful and the next super zesty, requiring a slug of water.

Finally - Soma

This was a disappointing end to our evening. I had been really looking forward to ordering this pizza. I had noticed it on nights when drinking martinis at Soma (which they do very well - try their Strawberry Basil martini sometime!). The plain cheese pizza arrived at our table with dollops of ricotta on top. This was an unexpected and unpleasant surprise. We scraped it off. One participant felt that the pizza tasted like old shoes. Another said that the crust was crisp, which was the only good thing about it. Two us ranked it similar to the other pizzas of the night, remarking that it was alright, "but uninspired."

While the company was stimulating on this pizza crawl, the same cannot be said about the pizza. None of the three was close to getting 4/5 stars, which really surprised me. Perhaps we are too particular in our taste, or perhaps we just know what we look for in a slice of pizza. We'll let you be the judge.
